An earthquake of the 2015 magnitude or even more cannot be ruled out in this region, because according to many national and international experts in Geology, Seismology and Earthquake, that jolt may not have released all the cumulative elastic energy that has been developed since the biggest earthquake in the region about a century ago.The unbroken upper part of the fault beneath the Kathmandu valley is continuously building up more pressure over time. As this part of the fault is nearer the surface, the future rupture of this upper portion has the potential for a much greater impact on Kathmandu if it were to break in one go in a similar-sized event to that of April 2015.It means another massive earthquake could hit the region anytime – it may happen tomorrow or it may take decades. Similarly, many researches have shown that huge amount of energy has already accumulated in a region from Pokhara to Far-Western of Nepal which could trigger an earthquake of magnitude higher than 7.5. But the question is, whether we are prepared to cope with the situation if it happens in near future and whether we have taken precautionary measures to lessen the losses incurred by such an eventuality. -
