High-ranking guests, who arrived in Kathmandu to participate in the International Conference on Nepal’s Reconstruction scheduled for tomorrow, visited the Basantapur Durbar Square area. The Square is enlisted in the list of World Heritage Sites.

Around 80 per cent historical and archeological buildings including Kasthamandap, Narayan Temple and Laxmi Narayan temple, among others, in the area suffered some sort of damage due to the April 25 earthquake.

The 34 guests wore helmet, gloves, mask and safety jackets as they were shown around the area. Chief of the Hanumandhoka Management Office, Saraswoti Singh, briefed them about the area.

Head of UNESCO delegation, Christian Manhart, who was also a part of the team told the National News Agency (RSS) that they will support the reconstruction of historical and archeological sites. He informed the assessment of the damage was underway for the same.

He further said UNESCO would formulate an extensive action plan for the reconstruction of archeological sites.

Similarly, JICA Chief Dr Akihiko Tanaka said JICA and Sri Lankan Minister of Disaster Management, A H M Fowsie, also said their country would extend necessary support for the reconstruction of damaged infrastructures.
